Times Higher Education – Masters or slaves of their time?

16 January 2004 by Huw Richards.   Quoting Huw Richards: “Similarly A. J. P. Taylor may famously have written (1950) that “The history of modern Europe can be written in terms of three Titans: Napoleon, Bismarck and Lenin”, but he also quoted approvingly Bismarck’s dictum: “Man cannot create the current of events. He can only… Continue reading Times Higher Education – Masters or slaves of their time?

Henry VII , first Tudor King

So, I was wondering how the House of Tudor began as an English Royal House.  From what I’ve read, the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485) was one of the last significant battles in the War of the Roses, and English civil war opposing the Yorkists and the Lancastrians. Decisive Lancastrian victory, according to Wikipedia. Henry… Continue reading Henry VII , first Tudor King

“Titulus Regius”, Bill of Parliament

Parliament had found (the year before) that the marriage of Edward IV of England to Elizabeth Woodville had been invalid, from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titulus_Regius   This was within the dynastic struggle of the “War of the Roses”. An extract of the Bill follows, copied from: http://www.r3.org/bookcase/texts/tit_reg.html     “Over this, amonges other things, more fpecially wee… Continue reading “Titulus Regius”, Bill of Parliament

Reformation, Elizabethan England

I believe the Protestant Reformation started in England under King Henry VIII, who wanted a marriage annulment. This led to a confrontation with the Pope. Later, Mary was Sovereign and also a Catholic, so some Protestants were persecuted. Later still, Elizabeth I became Sovereign and instituted the anti-Jesuit acts, 1585 also known as: 27 Elizabeth,… Continue reading Reformation, Elizabethan England

Cambodia secret bombing, Khmer Rouge, genocides

It’s quite well known that there was a secret arial bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam war.  The justification given was that comunist forces were camped-out in neutral Cambodia.  According to the Walrus, the US Air Force dropped about 2.7 million tons of ordnance on Cambodia from 1965 to 1973: http://walrusmagazine.com/articles/2006.10-history-bombing-cambodia/1/   For the politics… Continue reading Cambodia secret bombing, Khmer Rouge, genocides

Statute of Bankrupts (Henry VIII, 1542)

According to Wikipedia, the Statute of Bankrupts was the first English law relating to bankuptcy:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statute_of_Bankrupts . It has the enigmatic notation 34 & 35 Henry VIII, c. 4 . The 34, 35 designate the Regnal year of Henry VIII.  A parliamentary session started in early 1542.  Henry’s 34 Regnal year: “The 34 regnal year… Continue reading Statute of Bankrupts (Henry VIII, 1542)

“Going Broke” book review

Elsewhere, I mentioned the book “Going Broke: Why Americans Can’t Hold on to Their Money by Stuart Vyse. I read a chapter or two at Google Books.  As I recall, Vyse, although holding a good-paying job as a college professor of psychology, went through difficult financial periods.  Then he wrote a book based on interviews… Continue reading “Going Broke” book review

Computations for the Advancement of Mathematics Project

CAMP, for short.   This follows up on my earlier post reagarding a census on the Web of computations that, in some sense, tend to increase or decrease the likelihood of some conjecture being true.  It follows Bayes’ method in spirit.  The archetype would be Gauss’ counting of prime numbers up to some value `n’.  Did… Continue reading Computations for the Advancement of Mathematics Project

Variation on factorial primes

Factorial primes are those of the form n! +/- 1.  When n is large enough, n!+/-1 will not be divible by the primes less than n: 2, 3, 5, ..  last prime less than `n’. Are they “random primes”?  I would’n say that.  But while special primality tests exist for Mersenne numbers, I don’t know… Continue reading Variation on factorial primes

Nascent idea for a project

Stimulated by the work of Zeilberger and Sills on the Rademacher Conjecture, I’m now thinking of a name for a Project that would collect computations relevant to well-known problems in mathematics. With respect to Zeilberger’s Opinion piece,  don’t fault Mathematics of Computation for rejecting the submission.  I believe Journals should set their own standards, and… Continue reading Nascent idea for a project

Doron Zilberger videos about Rademacher Conjecture

Last night, I viewed two half-hour videos by Doron Zilberger.  There was clearly a “rant” side, because in a sense he was “remonstrating” to editor board people for not accepting a paper he co-authored. I’m not so interested in the disputation, adversarial issue ; rather, I’d like to learn more about Rademacher’s infinite continued fraction… Continue reading Doron Zilberger videos about Rademacher Conjecture
